The tax system in Hong Kong is simple and straightforward.
It is governed by the Inland Revenue Ordinance, of which the Ordinance is administered by the Commissioner of Inland Revenue.
There are three distinct and separate headings under which tax is levied :
Profits Tax - Corporations, partnerships, and sole proprietorship who carrying on a trade, professional or business in Hong Kong are subject to profits on profits which are generated from sources within Hong Kong;
- Only profits which arise in Hong Kong, or are derived from Hong Kong, are subject to profits tax;
- Currently, profits tax rate is 16.5%.
Property Tax - Property tax is levied on the owners of real estate which is situated in Hong Kong.
Salaries Tax - Individuals are charged to salaries tax on any income with a Hong Kong source which has been obtained from employment in Hong Kong;
- Only income arising from within Hong Kong is taxable.
